A small studio with a long attention span

Gramm Arcu Studio was founded by Keith Marcus, who still owns the practice and leads every project that comes through the door. Keith came to design through print — years spent setting type, preparing files, and standing beside presses taught him that design is a craft before it is a style, and that the last five percent of a project is where most of its character lives. The studio's name reflects that education: grammar for the rules that make communication legible, and the arc for the shape a good project traces from first conversation to finished work.

The studio began with a single desk and a borrowed proofing lamp, working for bookshops, small presses, and neighborhood organizations that needed serious design without the overhead of an agency. That clientele has grown but never really changed. Today the studio serves founders, arts organizations, museums, independent publishers, and civic groups across Virginia and along the East Coast, and occasionally further afield. Some clients have been returning for years, project after project, which we take as the truest measure of the work.

What has not changed is the scale. Gramm Arcu remains deliberately small: one owner, one studio, a handful of projects at a time. When you work with us, you work with Keith directly, supported by a trusted circle of photographers, printers, developers, and writers brought in when the project asks for them. There is no account layer between your ideas and the person executing them, and no handoff where intent can be lost.

Our approach is simple to describe and takes as long as it takes: listen carefully, draft honestly, refine patiently, deliver properly. We believe precision and warmth belong together — that rigor is how a studio shows respect for its clients, their audiences, and the work itself.
